The InSinkErator Evolution Excel is everything they claim. I've had this since May and all summer long I ran things through it like chicken bones, corn cobs, artichoke leaves, pork ribs, coffee grounds, old celery stalks, hard dried-out limes, etc, etc, etc. My wife always expected it to jam or blow a fuse but it powered on through every test like a champ. By keeping organic waste items out of the kitchen trash your house will not have as many unpleasant odors lingering about. The noise level is also very low if you follow the directions to cap the opposite sink drain and cover it with an inch or two of water for sound deadening. Heck, you'd almost not even realize it was grinding anything at all.

Buy it. You'll be happy.

We put this on a Kohler Cast Iron sink, and it was definitely a very difficult install. Both of us upside down, one holding the unit, the other trying to lock it in. Its very stout so its hard to visualize the lock ring. We really struggled. My plumber and I worked on it for almost three hours, its SO heavy its hard to hold it up while one is trying to lock it in. We were about to surrender, when it finally locked in. But its worth the work, this thing will eat entire hams without burping. The coolest feature, is an optional remote button can be mounted on one of the accessory holes, and then you don't need a switch installed over the countertop, just plug it in under the sink, push the button when you want to activate it. People have commented on how nice this was. Very quiet

This the best waste disposal unit ever made. Installation was fairly simple except for the mounting of the unit is a bit awkward without another person to hold it up. I used a car jack to hold it up while the locking ring is turned.

The unit is so quiet it is easy to leave it on. When I first switched it on to demonstrate it to my wife, she couldn't believe it was running.

It makes easy work of chicken bones and celery. The only thing that challenges it is onion skins but I assume no disposer canhandle these.

Overall a great product at admittedly a high price but well worth it.

There's not a lot to say... after all, it's a garbage disposal. The selling feature for this one is quiet, and wow... is it ever quiet! I purchased this to mount to my new stainless steel sink. I was rather concerned about noise from the disposal, but concerned as well about the sink resonating the sound and amplifying it somehow. Good news, no concerns at all after the install. Honestly, when the disposal is on and the water is running you can't hear the disposal over running water. Product works great, and as long as noise is a concern for you... pay the price increase for this and I believe you'll be happy like me.

This disposal is so far ahead of anything I've ever had before that I hardly know where to begin. Most disposals choke on a lot of things--banana peels, anything stringy, chicken bones--not this one. It does it all very smoothly and so quiet that you don't jump at the start of its powerful action. I cook with a lot of raw vegetables and this one is made for anyone serious about cooking from scratch. Love it!

"Quiet but not the most efficient" 2010-08-25

It is much quieter than the Badger 5 I had for ten years but I question the "new and improved" 2 stage grinding chamber. It seems if you put items such as lemon and lime peels in it takes forever for the unit to completely grind up this material. I haven't really put the unit to the test though with other materials so will have to reserve judgement.

This was a replacement unit and I'm pleased with it.
The old one died and I questioned whether I wanted to wait for this one to ship. So, I priced the identical disposal at the chain store and opted to place the order. It arrived much faster than the shipping date estimate and I installed it the same day.
I'm happy to have a disposal again. I do compost most fruit or vegetable waste and the disposal takes care of the rest.

Have installed 2 of these garbage disposers. It is quite solid, a bit heavier than many (most DIY'ers will need an extra hand attaching the disposer to the mounting ring), but installs VERY straightforward. If you have space limitations under your sink, this is probably the disposer for you. Most importantly, it grinds food VERY well and is SUPER QUIET. Definitely a different generation of disposer.

There are several Insinkerator units to choose from. I burnt up a small Badger and replaced it with the 3/4HP Evolution Compact which I purchased for $160 at Home Depot. This unit came with everything except the power cord which I removed from the old unit. Removing the old unit and installing the new one took 1 hour. Read the easy to follow instructions carefully and you'll have no problems. This unit is quiet and works wonderfully. As a side note be sure to purchase new plumbers puddy. I highly recommend this unit.

I purchased this product at Home Depot. It was less expensive than Amazon and Lowes. The old disposal came out easily. The instructions that come with the product are pretty good. Make sure you purchase the power cable kit. The unit does not come with a power cable. This is the biggest issue I had because my old disposal was wired directly into the switch on the wall and the wiring went behind the sink. Unless you ripped the back of the sink off, you weren't getting to this wiring. So I installed the power cable kit, cut off the power plug and spliced the new wires to the wires coming from the wall switch. Overall the installation follows the instructions well. If you have a tight under the sink area, it is a bit difficult getting the disposal to line up with the quick install ring. I had to get my wife to help hold the unit steady while I twisted the ring. It took a few times, but we got it in the end. One area of improvement the manufacturer could make is to increase the length of the rubber fitting used to connect to your water pipe. There is not much room for the clamp to fit on the pipe. In the end, you can install this yourself. The unit is much quieter than the old one we had.

We looked at several garbage disposals before deciding that it really isn't necessary to pay almost $100 more to get one of the "quiet" ones, since you need to run water along with the disposal, and that makes quite a bit of noise in itself. We are very happy with the Badger and were able to install it on our own fairly easily. It is as loud as garbage disposals always have been, but we both agree that muffling the sound would be as dissatisfying as when Vegas took out the coins dropping into the metal bins of slot machines.

I own a property management business in Oregon and we have a number of properties that require appliances all at once. We frequently purchase several of these to put into our custom homes. My recent experience with the Insinkerator disposal by Badger was very frustrating.

Our tenant was experiencing a dripping under the sink several times, and calling our maintenance person, we found there was a very slight crack along the base of the disposal itself, lenghwise. Clearly a problem with a brand new installed disposal.

I was directed to Brandon in Manila, Phillipines. I found that providing the serial number they begin the warranty from the date the item was manufactured.

I was put on hold for 20 minutes and had to call the tenant twice to get information confirming the Badger product.

Their fix was for me to take it to a warranty center to have it repaired. I found their non compliance to be very frustrating even if the employee was pleasant. They have obviously found a way to avoid making their warranty anything more valuable than the letters on the box.

I just came home to a lake in the kitchen! Thank goodness I was only gone an hour. The bottom of the replacable filter cracked open and spraying water at nearly a garden hose rate. No doubt about correct installation. This is a manufacturing defect. The filter should fail to filter when it goes bad and not fail and flood your home.
There is no excuse for a part made of essentially pvc not to last as long as pvc pipe and at least be engineered to the same specs. The crack is in a 3"circle on the very bottom and extends over 1/2 the way around. There is an obvious weak spot around the rest. Clearly this is a design flaw that should be immediately addressed and distribution stopped until it is. There is no excuse for a $200 kitchen convenience resulting in thousands of dollars in damage.
Now I have read about two others in 3 minutes and I wasn't even looking for stories. The replacement price is ridiculous at $25 dollars each... really! I'm supposed to replace this every 3 months? Do not buy this product or any other item that has such catastrophic low probability/ high consequence profile.

I buy water filters because family members like the idea. The only specifications published by InSinkErator indicate that the product filters out rust and chlorine taste and odor. No data on biologicals filtration. The product very likely does meet its specs, but it is hard to tell that it does anything to the soft water supplied by the weel regarded public utility that we drank unfiltered for decades. It doesn't change the taste. Easy to install, but take care with dirpping water when you remove the old one. A little pricey for uncertain benefits. Three stars for design and our faith in the manufacturer and the comfort it gives to some in the family. Perhaps users who have hard water, water with off tastes or color, or more highly chlorinated water will write with more specific information on its benefits. :)

InSinkErator F-201R Filtration Replacement Cartridges, 2-Pack We woke up this morning to discover that our kitchen was flooded with water from a crack in a F201R filter. The water seeped through the floor and rained into our basement, covering a wide area. We had to call in professional contractors who removed the almost-new flooring from our kitchen and drilled holes around the bottom of each cabinet to allow tubes to be inserted from multiple industrial strength dehumidifying units. It's a real mess, and it will be several weeks until the kitchen is fully restored. Fortunately it is covered by USAA insurance. The contractor who built our kitchen never told us that we needed to replace the filter, in fact I didn't know that it was there until today. Instant hot water is a nice feature, but we have made little use of it. Now I am wary about using it at all.

This unit was installed in the condo my boyfriend bought, and worked OK for the first little while, but after about 2 years of light use it stopped working (totally dead; tried all the suggested fixes, many times, no luck reviving it), and about the same time we noticed a growing crack in the black plastic body of the disposal, where a small leak had developed (thankfully that seemed to happen about when we stopped using it, so we didn't have any issues with the floor of the cabinet rotting or having mold develop like others have).

Bought this disposal to replace an old badger 1 that I'd used for over 10 years. It came with the house so it could be much older. This one lasted less than a year and a half. I hope I just got a bad one but after looking at the other reviews I doubt it. I'm thinking their quality has gone downhill over the years at least with the badger line. Just bought an evolution excel model hoping that they are better quality.

Well, this disposer is cheap. It's also noisy and vibrates a lot, so you get what you pay for. Also it rusted out and started leaking after five years. I would spend the extra money up front and buy a higher quality model.

The functionality of this device once setup is great. I'm using it for a disposal and hot water dispenser.

However, I don't understand why ISE makes this as a plug-in only device. Almost every existing disposal is hardwired to a Romex cord coming out of the wall. In order to use this device in an existing installation, you would need to install a new receptacle from the existing Romex wire and then plug this switch into it.

I would prefer the wiring for this device to be like their disposals where you can easily hardwire it or wire in a regular power plug.

Ever wonder which switch to use? Is this one for the light or is it that one? Which one is for the disposal? Is it on the left or the right? Guess wrong and you just might wake up the household. Staying over to babysit our grandchildren we feed, play, read, and rock them until they fall exhausted . . . (oops that's us not them) into dreamland. Now it's time to turn on a light over the sink but trying to figure out which switch is which becomes a problem, especially when you have just gotten the cherubs to sleep and desire some much needed quiet time for yourself. We're old, we get confused and because it's not our house we have suffered the consequences of making the wrong choice. To err is human but to air (switch) can be divine! Having chosen the wrong one once too many times prepared us for choosing this InSinkErator SinkTop switch for our home. It is awesome, no confusing this with a light switch. It works at the touch of a finger and works only when we want it to. Installation was easy and we can finally say we chose the right switch this time!

Before, the disposal switch was under the sink, not the most convenient location. This fits right on the sink surface and the only connection between the switch and the control unit is a small plastic air tube. Much safer than flipping the switch with wet hands. The only thing I would have like to see is a few more switch color options. Otherwise, it works exactly as advertised.

I recently replaced the 8-year-old 1/3 HP disposer that was originally under the kitchen sink with this 3/4 HP unit. The install went smoothly, and was probably a bit simpler than normal since I also replaced the kitchen sink at the same time; so I had easy access to the bottom. Everything I needed was included in the box except for some plumber's putty and a power cord, which I took off of the old unit. Since the old unit was also from InSinkErator, the power cord included the strain-relief clamp so I just re-used that too.

As far as the size goes, this is larger than the old 1/3 HP unit; but not as much larger as I thought it would be. Overall, everything that fit beneath the sink before still fits so the size hasn't been an issue at all. Not that it really matters under the sink, but the disposer also looks great:).

When it comes to performance, this disposer is amazing! It isn't silent, but it's a lot quieter than any other disposer we've ever owned. It has plenty of capacity for a 5 person family - it chews through everything from potato skins and orange peels to ice quickly and without a complaint. I can't believe we waited so long to replace our old disposer!

We also considered getting the lower-capacity 'compact' Evolution model from InSinkErator, but I'm glad we went with this one. On the other hand, if you have limited space or don't need the higher capacity then the compact would probably make more sense - especially since it has the same power.

Overall, I highly recommend this disposer.

I am not as enthralled with this disposer as everyone else seems to be. Yes, it's quiet if you have the black-thingy in the drain, but big deal. The main thing I want in a garbage disposal is for it to grind the food efficiently. I replaced a 10-year-old Insinkerator Pro 333 3/4 horsepower which was absolutely wonderful. Although not especially loud, you could tell by the sound when the food was ground up - and it was ground up in seconds. The Evolution Essential takes about three times as long, and I am always removing the black-thingy to peek inside to see if it is finished. It seldom is. Plus, the black-thingy keeps water from draining quickly, so if you pour a big pot of boiling spaghetti-water into a collander, you get a sink-full of boiling water and a steam burn. I miss my Pro 333.

After I hooked up this In-sink-erator model, I ran cold water into it, and turned it on. It just hummed. If you have an older disposer like we did: Do you know the hum it makes when it's jammed up and you have to release it? Well, imagine the sound of that hum . . . then cut it in half . . . and that's the sound that THIS new In-sink-erator makes when its "grinding" water. No gurgley-gurgley noise at all. Unbelievably quiet. And when it's actually grinding food, it's still very quiet and so fast that it's done in a flash. This one has 3/4 horsepower versus the 1/2 horsepower oldie that it replaced.

I recently purchased a garbage disposal in which I am very well pleased. It was easy to install, but what I really like is that it is very quiet. It came with instructions which was easily understandable. And, it is easy on the eyes. The reason for purchaseing this item is that I live out in the country and I have a septic tank. There is no smelly aroma with the liquid dispencer that comes with it to eliminate any types of unpleasant odors. Now that I have it, installed it, and it works very well. We purchased this disposer for our cottage in northern Wisconsin. Never had one before because we were concerned about the septic system. Found this unit, designed for use with septic systems, and couldn't be happier. Installation was straightforward, with easy to follow instructions. Unit is very quiet, and chews up just about everything without any effort. Well, except for the dish rag we put down by accident, but even that didn't jam it, we just heard a weird noise and shut it off. Great product, great feature with the bio-waste chemical it injects to aid the septic system. We also bought an air-activated pushbutton switch to turn it on. Neat innovation that uses air hoses to activate power...much easier than rewiring a wall to add the switch. Works flawlessly.

The product was shipped on time and looked to be in great shape. BOY WAS I WRONG. Once the disposal was installed it would only hum but not turn. I tried everything to get it to work before calling the company. They instructed me to hit the reset button. Like I had not tried this already. After a few days the company finally gave me a reference code for a handy man. The handy man came out and said the bearing was damaged in it and they would replace it for free. Now I am just waiting for another one to come in and hopefully it will work.

Last year I wrote a good review for my 12 year old Badger 1 unit that I was retiring after 12 years of faithful service. I decided to replace the old unit with another Badger and chose this 5XP model. I had such good luck with with the Badger 1 that I chose to stay with the Badger line, but just upgrade to the more powerful unit. Installation was a breeze as the units were the same size.
I've now had this unit for about one year and unfortunately it does not perform any better than the old unit, in fact it even makes more noise! I still cannot grind very much in it and it appears to be no more powerful than the old unit.
I was expecting a more powerful unit that could perhaps handle a little more bulk than the Badger 1. What I got was basically the same unit as the Badger 1, just a little louder now.

The InSink Erator Badger I purchased last April was shipped to me here in the Philippines this month. I was having it installed when I first noticed there was no power cord. Fortunately I still had the old Badger and was able to use the cord. After installation, the new Badger did not work! It just produced a stuck-up sound. Now I have to suffer the consequence of buying overseas. The seller (Grady's Ace Hardware) should have inspected the item before delivery.

The cover control depends on the disposal sink stopper to turn the disposal on and off. There are magnets in the stopper that make contact when the stopper is turned. After less than a month, the stopper was very rusty and contact could no longer be made and the disposal would not turn on.
You'd think they would make a stopper that wouldn't rust, since that is critical to the operation of the disposal. To their credit, InSinkErator sent a tech out and he replaced it with an equivalent non-cover control model and even had 1/4 additional HP, at no charge. This one operates with a wall switch like most other disposals and it works great.
The Cover Control model is not ready for prime time. I recommend against buying it.

We just installed this insinkerator and it is great. We did not have the space for a wall swich to activate it, so the cover control is great. It is so quiet you dont even know it is on. But all the food waste is gone when you look.
I would definitely recommend this to others. I used to have an older one that lasted 14 years and they have made many imporovements here.
Remember, you will get what you pay for, so the ones for under $150, take your chances.

This Garbage disposal replaced the Pro 17 series which was excallent. Needing to replace the original one after 17yrs, I went w/this new replacement model(according to Insinkerator) for ease of installation. I find it too quiet and sometimes it turns on very easily w/the magnet attraction and runs when you don't even know it's on. This could potentially cause damage to the unit if the water isn't running. Other times it is hard to engage the turn on. It also catches alot of food in the cover which should be washing down the drain. I wish I choose a different ISE model.

I have installed dozens of Insinkerator products and, thanks to the Amazon reviews, have finally figured out why their hot water dispensers have failed so fast - it was a defective design that Insinkerator refuses to acknowledge. As a result, we are now looking for another brand of hot water dispensers to use (if anyone has a suggestion, we would appreciate it).
Also, when I called Insinkerator for support, they told me that the warranty was only one year and their only suggestion is to purchase their new tank (SST-FLTR). Whether the warranty was only one year or whether they were giving me incorrect information is of no further consequence - we will no longer install Insinkerator products in our rental units because I can no longer trust the Company to sell properly designed products.

We replaced our original Insinkerator hot water dispenser after 20 years. Loved it! But the new one has been in just 3 years and the water has developed a bad taste - like old plastic. All insinkerator tells me is that it must be my water supply. This has unchanged in over 10 years so that is not the issue. Replacing a $150 unit with a $280 stainless tank is rediculous. May have to shop for a different brand.

Not only does the tank leak, but the filter failed (cracked) while we were on vacation resulting in a $20,000 insurance claim replacing our kitchen floor. I love the concept, use it almost everyday, but I'm buying another brand for replacement.

First tank failed after about a 1 1/2 years. Replacement tank failed after another year. Still have a few months on left on the 3 year warranty but I'm not going to bother because it is a badly designed product. Even when new, the flow rate is not that good due to very narrow inlet that clogs if you have hard water. Also the vent piping inside kinks due to a bad and cheaply made housing design. So I had to periodically maintain this until the heater or thermal switch failed. I replaced it a Quick&Hot brand. I don't know if it will last but it was less than 1/2 the cost and it is a simpler open vent design with a much higher flow rate. - Phil

"Two different models LEAK, but 3-year warranty" 2010-07-24

I had the cheaper model which lasted for a few years then sprang a leak. So I got a new one, same model. It too leaked. So, I got the more expensive model with the stainless steel tank and filter. Guess what? LEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAKKKKKK.
I was so pleasantly surprised when an InSinkErator Customer Service person added a comment to this review (also to another negative review) asking for my contact information. So, I gave my email and phone number to her with a compliment for good 'follow-up'. A week goes by, no response. What's worse? Ignoring unhappy customers or raising the customers' expectations then disappointing them?
I emailed and called and got auto-replies telling me she was out of the office. Eventually, she did reach me and she was very nice. She suggested I use a flashlight and mirror to read (in mirror reverse) the model and serial numbers on the device. With those numbers, she confirmed that my appliance has a 3-year warranty so is still under warranty. She arranged for a service person to come, diagnose, replace... at no charge to me, so the device is working again and I am happy.
I upgraded my Amazon rating from one star to only 3 stars because there is a design defect as well as a manufacturing defect. I have had three tanks all of which leaked. The repair guy asked whether I turned the temperature up because that stresses the tank and can cause it to leak. I, in fact, had turned the temperature DOWN precisely to lower the interior steam pressure.
There are fixes for this problem: InSinkErator can just change the artwork that indicates the temperature so you won't know to turn it up too high. That is an inexpensive fix. Or change the switch so that it cannot be overheated. Or, they can do it right by re-designing the tank so it can take the stress.
The tank doesn't cost $200 (that's the retail price) to manufacture (unless they have inefficient processes) so either they have big margins or the money is being spent on other things.

This unit delivers hot water and does a good job, but both the faucet and the tank have design issues. I've had mine for over 3 years. The handle on the faucet breaks off or just comes off very easily. I was never able to determine if something broke or if its the design until I went to a local appliance store and saw one of these set up as a display. Tried the handle and it came off in my hand and clattered on the granite counter. A salesperson who heard the noise commented that the handle was always doing that and they couldn't fix it. Rather than go through the lousy Insinkerator customer service we have just lived with being careful and re-attaching the handle every so often.
The tank just started leaking after 3 years. Check the reviews here on Amazon for the tank with the built in filter. Out of less than 40 reviews, 19 are one star and most complain about the tank leaking. It's prone to corrosion and the connectors are prone to breakage. I doubt that there is much difference between that tank and the one that comes with this unit. Read the comments when people tried to get Insinkerator to honor the warranty. This will definitely be my last Insinkerator instant hot water appliance.
If you do get this, Make sure you put a container under it because it will leak.

We bought this hot water dispenser to replace a 12 year old Insinkerator hot water dispenser. The tank started leaking so it was time to replace it.
The model we had before was no longer available, so I started researching dispensers of all brands. It's amazing how expensive some of them are, so in a mid-range model, this one rated out the best. So far, so good. It's churning out instant super-hot water and doing its job! I have learned that I can not live without one of these! I use it several times a day--making hot tea, filling up pots, cleaning the sink, feeding our birds (they eat a warm cereal type bird food in the morning), and anything else that needs to get hot fast!
I read several reviews of hot water dispensers and this one rated at the top for its price range. You can spend big bucks on these little wonders, but a mid-range one will work fine for you.

WARNING I bought two different models of this unit at Home Depot today and both of them were designed for a counter top of less than one inch thick. Our counter top is over two inches. On a call to their 800 number they acknowledged that they have recognized the problem and the new models they are just now manufacturing have the deeper throats. which will fit counter tops of various thicknesses. It is unfortunate that neither in the on line product descriptions or on the exterior of the box was there any mention that the unit would fit only counter tops of less than one inch thick without a jerry rigged extension of some sort which you have to special order from the company..

Everything is good, except the handle breaks off easily. Although it is covered by a 3 year warranty, the way the handle is designed makes it prone to breaking off easily.
I am waiting for my first replacement handle, but if it comes back with the same design flaws, I am pretty sure if it will happen again unless if they modified the design.

"Poor Quality" 2010-01-28

This is a replacement for an older model H990 unit that was dying after 10 years of use. The upper portion of the unit is identical, but the undersink heater unit appears to be made of plastic, not metal, like the previous model (which had a copper tank enclosed in styrofoam enclosed in sheet metal). Notably, the other unit ran silent but this model--which you think would be an improvement--makes a very noticeable "roaring" sound when heating the water, audible over a low TV or conversation even from under the sink. Also, the water out of the tap is about 30 degrees cooler (170 vs. 200) at the "factory preset" thermostat setting. Product description on Amazon is confusing and contradictory: is it a 1 yr or 3 yr warranty? 120 or 115 volts? 2/3 gallon or 1/2 gallon tank? It gets the job done, but it's the little things like this that give the impression of diminishing quality from the InSinkErator brand, and at this price point you expect more.

Point-of-use or instant-on water heaters are not well-known in the US, although recent coverage on home improvement TV has made people more aware of them. This isn't new technology, though. These systems (both small ones, like this, and large ones that mount near a bathroom) are quite common in Europe. I lived in a place in Germany that used a larger version in the bathrooms, and they really work well. They are extremely efficient, because water is only heated when needed. You don't burn a lot of gas or electricity keeping the water warm in a hot water tank. And, ironically, the water is immediately hot when you turn on the tap, so you don't waste water, waiting for the hot water to actually get hot.

We installed a slightly different dispenser and the same heater tank a couple of years ago, when we were doing some remodeling in our kitchen, just before our youngest son was born. It is great for hot chocolate, heating up formula, making tea, and you can even make things like instant oatmeal, ramen, and others items that simply require boiling water very quickly. The temperature is adjustable, but the heating unit (not included, it's a separate purchase) heats water to just below boiling, and it IS immediately hot. We have to warn people about it.

My wife says it is her favorite thing that we added to the kitchen. I thought she was going to die without it, when we had trouble with it a year ago (an internal seal broke. It's a sealed unit with no user serviceable parts inside. It was a manufacturing defect, and InSinkerator sent a technician to the house to replace it at no charge). I think it's a toss-up between this and the near-silent Bosch dishwasher, but I definitely missed this, until we got a replacement.

Wow, how excited was I to think that I might get a great deal on this? After all it was $190.00 off... well, as it turns out, you still have to buy the hot water tank for $200.00. It's in the fine print, making it nearly $500.00 for a hot water dispenser. I'm just a bit miffed that the item doesnt explictiy state that it's only for the faucet up front. After years of clutter around the sink area with separate taps for the hot water dispenser and filtered cold water this combined tap is wonderful and gives the kitchen that extra streamlined look. Another plus is that the cold water handle will stay open to fill those jugs of water. The one thing I would say has to do with the way the product description reads.
The description does not immediately make it obvious that this is only a tap not the dispenser, the dispensers are sold separately. Otherwise a great product for the average handyperson.

When I was in my late twenties I bought a house that had one of these in the kitchen. I had never seen one before. Well, after a month with it, I was hooked and have installed them (yes, myself) in every house I've lived in since. I bought this water dispenser for a bar sink off the master bedroom. I drink a lot of herb tea and flavored coffee mixes. I have one in the kitchen and wouldn't have a kitchen without one. Anytime a recipe calls for boiling water I just fill up my measuring cup and I'm done---no heating on the stove top or microwaving. If you are a tea tottler, you must own one of these.

The faucet arrived on time but there is an area of about 1/32" square on the tip of the spout which has the paint chipped off. Amazon offered 20% discount if I want to keep the faucet. Amazon was very prompt and helpfull. I aslo called Insinkerator to see if they have the tip of the spout. Needless to say, their service is terrible and ofcourse they don't have the part! The valve of my previous faucet got stuck (sound familiar?). I just got the new stainless steel tank so I'm stuck with Insink for the time being. I hope it will last a bit to have time for someone else come up with a better product. I mark 3 stars because of the Insink product.

"Two different models LEAK, but 3-year warranty" 2010-07-24

I had the cheaper model which lasted for a few years then sprang a leak. So I got a new one, same model. It too leaked. So, I got the more expensive model with the stainless steel tank and filter. Guess what? LEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAKKKKKK.
I was so pleasantly surprised when an InSinkErator Customer Service person added a comment to this review (also to another negative review) asking for my contact information. So, I gave my email and phone number to her with a compliment for good 'follow-up'. A week goes by, no response. What's worse? Ignoring unhappy customers or raising the customers' expectations then disappointing them?

I emailed and called and got auto-replies telling me she was out of the office. Eventually, she did reach me and she was very nice. She suggested I use a flashlight and mirror to read (in mirror reverse) the model and serial numbers on the device. With those numbers, she confirmed that my appliance has a 3-year warranty so is still under warranty. She arranged for a service person to come, diagnose, replace... at no charge to me, so the device is working again and I am happy.
I upgraded my Amazon rating from one star to only 3 stars because there is a design defect as well as a manufacturing defect. I have had three tanks all of which leaked. The repair guy asked whether I turned the temperature up because that stresses the tank and can cause it to leak. I, in fact, had turned the temperature DOWN precisely to lower the interior steam pressure.
There are fixes for this problem: InSinkErator can just change the artwork that indicates the temperature so you won't know to turn it up too high. That is an inexpensive fix. Or change the switch so that it cannot be overheated. Or, they can do it right by re-designing the tank so it can take the stress.
The tank doesn't cost $200 (that's the retail price) to manufacture (unless they have inefficient processes) so either they have big margins or the money is being spent on other things.

"Poor Reliability, Expensive Product" 2010-09-13

As with most others, I purchased the F-HC1100C hot and cold dispenser. After seven years have replaced the tank 4 times, only once being replaced under warranty. It seems to have a built in clock that causes it to fail just when the warranty expires! As with the leaking, I've used Lime Away with no harmfull effects to the chrome finish. Just pour a little on top, let it soak for 30-45 minutes and rinse off. I then put a drop of light lubricating oil in each valve seat and wa-la, works fine. As far as the filters go, you can buy a Whirlpool brand filter at Lowe's for $10 that works just fine. It is a longer, cylinder shape that has the exact same top screw fitting. The only reason I put up with the extremely high expense is I drink instant coffee and it makes it very convenient rather than using the stove or microwave to heat water. Looks nice on the sink too! Just be willing to pay for the looks and convenience! Consider you can buy a 40 gallon hot water tank for the same price as the SST FLTR unit, now that's a real value! In Sink Erator has a captive customer base that apparently has more money than brains.

After buying this hot cool Insinkerator unit and installing it, i found that the tank started leaking. Insinkerator sent me a replacement. Now, the other day my wife pulled on the cool water lever, and it just stuck in the on position.
After many frustrating calls to these people, i tried to repair the unit myself. Wd40 didn't loosen the valve, so i took my drill, drilled a very small hole in the center of the vinyl plunger, screwed in a small screw and pulled the plunger up. I then found a washer that fit above the plunger so that the lever couldn't push the plunger down, and put it back together. The cool lever is inop, but it looks good and the hot works perfectly.
This is a piece of JUNK, but there isn't anything else out there, and this company could care less about quality.

Bought this 5/2007 and had installed during kitchen remodel. Like it alot. Had trouble with the heater tank unit leaking at its internal vinyl tube; fixed by replacing with a silicone tube (see reviews for the tank). Have not had any problems with the dispenser yet, but plan to fix/replace it if/when it happens. My family likes and uses this enough that it will be worth doing. It is a shame that the product has had a poor reliability record, and that repair parts cannot be purchased.

We purchased this in 2007 and by 2009 the cold water lever/handle was no longer functional. We tried to make due but then it stopped working completely. Contacted InSinkErator they told me it would be months before a replacement dispenser would arrive from the Manufacturer ! I called several times, their customer service would hang up on me or disconnect or they didn't know what happened they lost the call , Yeah, Right, we know about that. Finally after wasting many hours of the day I finally reached a supervisor who was very unpleasant but did agree to get a unit to me faster but she also hung up on me. I want to be clear that at No time was I rude, loud or inappropriate ! This company is horrible! I will Never purchase anything from them again. The unit did arrive after me calling and confirming Many many times. I am hoping it will work for awhile but when it goes out I am definitely purchasing another brand and I already have that chosen here at Amazon.com. Just Beware, Don't Buy from InSinkErator, Big Mistake !!!!!

Today, I started to replace my filter (which was the original F-501 type) with the F-601R. Couldn't get it to seat because of the sealed top with the little hole. I thought it was a plug but it wouldn't come out, so I had to cut it out. For the amount of money the unit costs, this shouldn't happen. After reading the previous review I guess I had better pray that the hot water tank doesn't fail. The unit is 3 and 1/2 years old.

I have a 5 year old Insinkerator hot water dispenser. I purchased this brand name replacement filter. Only when it arrived it wouldn't fit. The top has a very small hole to join the tubing (1-2 mm), but the fixture you attach the filter to has one that is close to 1cm. I called insinkerator and they said it was just a plug and to pull it out. I tried and it tore out in pieces. I had to use a round file to make the opening large enough and smooth enough to allow it to fit. Clearly it was not a plug. The box came with 2 filters the other one was the same way so I drilled it out. Obviously they have changed the way these filters fit their fixtures and their support personal are clueless. The same thing happened when I had to replace the tank itself after 3 years. They didn't make the same tank so I had to replumb the sink in order for it to fit. Needless to say I wouldn't have another Insinkerator product. Something this simple shouldn't be such a pain in the ass. I would give it no stars but the system wouldn't let me.

This is my third Insinkerator HOT-1. The first two lasted about 8 years each. The problem is that the storage tank developed a leak and then the unit is done for. This time I spent at lot of time searching for a unit that would last longer. After reading all the reviews I could find, I decided to stay with the HOT-1. It works well and I like the small capacity tank. The more expensive models have larger stainless steel tanks that will last longer, but use more energy to keep the water warm all the time. Since we used our unit only a few times a week, tank capacity is not an issue. it is relatively easy to install. One trick I came up with is to tie a string around the top of dispenser handle and then have someone pull the unit up by treading the string through the hole in the sink while you guide it in from below. This saves a lot of time, because otherwise it is very hard to position the unit into the sink opening from below. It took me less than an hour to install it.

I've gone through 2 of these in about 4 years. lousy, lousy, lousy! They both failed with the same symptom - they pop the AFCI circuit breaker. It seems like there are many complaints for this product. Why would InSinkErator sell such crap when it destroys their reputation. I won't buy anything from them, again.

Stay away from this product!!!! There are other choices with excellent reviews.

We have used this hot water dispenser for over three years with absolutely no problem and I use it throughout the day every day. I drink a LOT of hot tea so it gets used all the time. I had the same kind at my other home and never had a problem with it there, either. I hate to see that so many have had a bad experience with it but it has worked great for us and doesn't take up a ton of space. I couldn't be more pleased...for the price, it's my favorite kitchen appliance!

The hot water dispenser is one of the most used appliances in our kitchen. It's not just for making a couple of quick cups of tea (which we do nightly), but it's used throughout the day for wiping, cleaning, sanitizing, or getting a jump start on boiling a pot of water. When I had the stove and microwave removed for a week while remodeling the kitchen, my wife never once said anything about the inconvenience. When the hot water dispenser goes out, she hands me my car keys for a trip to the hardware store for a replacement. The Insinkerator H770 is the third Insinkerator I've installed. It is now the last Insinkerator I'll every buy. Like the other two (Hot-1s), it didn't last long. The Hot-1s lasted just over two years each, the H770 has lasted less than that. H770 safety flaw: Recently, I found the circuit breaker had tripped during the night. I disassembled the tank. The heating coil sheath is corroded through, though it appears to be stainless steel. The tank is still in great shape (it is definitely stainless steel). Thus, my first sign of trouble was when the circuit breaker tripped. In my opinion, exceeding rated amperage on a house circuit and depending on tripping an electrical safety device is not an acceptable way for Insinkerator to let me know there is a problem beginning inside the tank. Hooray for circuit breakers. By contrast, the Hot-1 tank is thin copper. It corrodes through causing a mess under the sink before the heating coil can short out. In a strange way, that is a safer design, though obviously still highly undesirable.

For completeness: H770 pros:

- Adequate reservoir size: The tank is large enough that you can get two cups of hot water for tea before the cold water begins to cool things down too much. The Hot-1's tank is too small for two mugs of tea.

- Practically instant flow of hot water. There is a small reservoir at the top of the tank which provides a volume of hot water at the ready. It works well. The Hot-1s had a noticeable delay between activating the dispenser and receiving flow. Also, the Hot-1 can spit hot water toward the end of the heating cycle. The H770 never did.

- Narrow tank: There is just enough room between the sink drain pipe and the cabinet sidewall to slide this tank all the way to the back wall, out of the way in the corner. There are other companies who missed this fine point.

- warranty period: Three years. But I'm not going to take advantage of it.

H770 cons:

- Twist top dispenser: No one in the family likes it. Unless your hands are dry, it requires a lot of grip to keep it from slipping--especially if they are soapy. Also, having had two dispensers with levers before, we found that what we used to be able to do with one hand (hold a cup and push the lever at the same time), now required two hands.

- Low profile faucet: We all much prefer a high arch to the dispenser faucet.

- Electrical safety!!

After this incident, my wife didn't hand me my keys for the trip to the hardware store since they only stock Insinkerators. We decided it was worth the wait for a different brand to arrive by mail. (We went with Waste King, ordered through Amazon.)

This H770 is now the third of the model line I've purchased in the last decade for three different houses. Seems to always be the price/performance point that I go for. Not the top of the heap in build quality, but what do you expect when the price is on the low-end? Fortunately, over time InSinkErator has improved build quality and features. The latest model is definitely the best of the three and I sure like having a large temperature control dial over the previous small hole for a screwdriver.

As for hissing and spitting issue, the solution is simple - turn the temperature control down so it is below a boil.

My two-year-old H770-SS started leaking a few weeks ago and a call to Insinkerator got me a new tank delivered under warranty. After installing the new tank I disassembled the old unit and found that the leak was not from the tank, but from a plastic hose that had been overheated as it was up against the hot tank over a part of its run. I would characterize this as a design or fabrication flaw, likely common to all units built around that time.

We purchased one in 2006 and had it professionally installed by a plumber we often use. It's never worked that well. When it cycles to heat water, it leaks out the spigot. I turned down the heat setting and that solved some of it, but not all. And, of course, the lower temperature means that "near boiling" isn't even close. Now, four years after we installed it, the case is leaking and the unit needs to be replaced. Our plumber tells us that this is typical for these units, and he replaces InSinkErator instant hot water dispensers all the time. Even with a warranty, we plan to scrap it and buy something better -- anything except from this manufacturer.

The quality of this product has really gone downhill. The first one I purchased lasted 10 years until it started leaking. This time the dispenser started leaking after only 2 1/2 years. It was a nice convenience while it lasted but I will go back to heating water in the microwave. The fact that InSinkErator only warranties this dispenser for 3 years should tell you something. I would not recommend purchasing this brand.

"It worked for me." 2010-09-18

I replaced the older version of this product with this model. The older version had a "plastic" odor and taste to the hot water coming out. The installation was done by my neighbor's son because it was easier for him to maneuver under the sink. We followed the instructions in the box. We found it an easy one for one replacement. It's been over six months and I have no issues. The "plastic" odor and taste is non-existant and I have no leaks. It worked for me.

My unit has a stainless steel tank and it was marked as manufactured 1/2007 (on the metal tank), and a serial # starting with "07".
I had some email exchange with Insinkerator customer/technical support and was told that the tube material has not been changed, but they indicated that my comments (including the vinyl issue and silicone replacement) would be passed on to product folks. They also worked with me, helping me more than I expected, including waiving the requirement for an "authorized" plumber.

I would recommend to all current and future owners of this model to make the tube replacement even it hasn't failed yet because of water damage to cabinets/floor and because the tube is directly over the electrical components, so is both a shock and fire hazard.

I and my family like the filter/heater/dispenser alot and so consider it worth repairing/replacing as needed. Would give 5* if not for issues with reliability, materials, lack of repair parts, and warranty limits/requirements. All of these could be improved; here's to hoping...

I recently did a kitchen remodel and was looking here on Amazon to get a stainless/satin nickel looking dispenser to replace the cream colored one we have. I'm suprised at all the hate towards this product as mine has worked just fine for the past 2 years. The only issue is it randomly dribbles an ounce or so of water out without touching it. This happens maybe once every couple hours. I'm still happy with the product. I've called their customer service before to ask them how to remove the Y connector and the representative immediatly was able to tell me how to do this and sent me a new one just case I messed up the one I had. So no issues with customer service as far as I have been involved with them.
In my humble opinion, most folks will not take the time to post a positive comment and thus what you usually see for reviews are the folks that post negative things. Every manufacturer will get a fluke from the production line. You can put money on the fact that when someone out in the internet community purchases something that performs poorly, they will go out of their way to let others know about their bad experience.

I heard so much bad stuff about this product that I was afraid to buy it. I thought the tea kettle would suffice. I missed my instant hot water so much that I went ahead and ordered it. My boyfriend installed it. It gave him some difficulty, but not an awful lot. So far it has been great. I did read that they don't last long and will eventually leak like the metal one did, which is why I bought this tank in the 1st place. I love my instant hot water. It was worth the investment.

Product worked great for a little over a year, until the warranty ran out. Now, after 15 months it has sprung a leak. The warranty is supposed to be 5 years on the "bronze tank"--time will tell whether InSinkErator stands behind the product. I hope that they do, and that they improve the issues that others have reported.

However, between my own experience and that of many other people on the site, I cannot recommend this point-of-use kitchen water heater at all, due to the leak we're now experiencing.

I DO however recommend these things in theory, as having the instant hot water for making coffee, tea or cleaning has been awesome. I want to get this thing fixed or replaced--I love having the feature. Just not the boiling water spilling out underneath my sink.

Bought it to use with under-the-sink instant hot unit. Small filter, fits well in tight space under the sink, very easy to install - literally "plug and go". You can find all sizes and installation instructions on the manufacturer web site if you need it beforehand.

"Fantastic addition to a kitchen!" 2009-07-15

Point-of-use or instant-on water heaters are not well-known in the US, although recent coverage on home improvement TV has made people more aware of them. This isn't new technology, though. These systems (both small ones, like this, and large ones that mount near a bathroom) are quite common in Europe. I lived in a place in Germany that used a larger version in the bathrooms, and they really work well. They are extremely efficient, because water is only heated when needed. You don't burn a lot of gas or electricity keeping the water warm in a hot water tank. And, ironically, the water is immediately hot when you turn on the tap, so you don't waste water, waiting for the hot water to actually get hot.
We installed a slightly different dispenser and the same heater tank a couple of years ago, when we were doing some remodeling in our kitchen, just before our youngest son was born. It is great for hot chocolate, heating up formula, making tea, and you can even make things like instant oatmeal, ramen, and others items that simply require boiling water very quickly. The temperature is adjustable, but the heating unit (not included, it's a separate purchase) heats water to just below boiling, and it IS immediately hot. We have to warn people about it.

My wife says it is her favorite thing that we added to the kitchen. I thought she was going to die without it, when we had trouble with it a year ago (an internal seal broke. It's a sealed unit with no user serviceable parts inside. It was a manufacturing defect, and InSinkerator sent a technician to the house to replace it at no charge). I think it's a toss-up between this and the near-silent Bosch dishwasher, but I definitely missed this, until we got a replacement.

Wow, how excited was I to think that I might get a great deal on this? After all it was $190.00 off... well, as it turns out, you still have to buy the hot water tank for $200.00. It's in the fine print, making it nearly $500.00 for a hot water dispenser. I'm just a bit miffed that the item doesnt explictiy state that it's only for the faucet up front. Here's the item's description as posted on Amazon.com:

This is the second in-sink erator hot/cold dispenser/faucet I've owned. I think this one is aesthetically very nice and reasonably straightforward to install. I use it with a 2-stage filtration system and a hot water heater.
I'd say the cosmetics and convenience are great. I have two dislikes though. (1) First this is really expensive. (2) Second the cold water doesn't stay on. There's a spring and no available position for locking it on, e.g., to fill a pitcher of cold water. This is fairly inconvenient, and my previous ISE hold-cold faucet had this. Also, this faucet doesn't extend very far into the sink which can make it a little inconvenient to fill certain shape containers.
I would buy this again if I couldn't find a better alternative, because I love having a hot/cold filtered water dispenser on the sink. But I would look carefully first for some other alternative that was either more reasonably priced, or could lock the cold water on.

We've had this installed now for about 9 months and it's pretty good except:

1. I don't like the short spout and wish it were a little taller.

2. The water flow is very slow.

3. The lever for the cold water is spring-operated and you have to hold it in the on position to maintain the water flow (I thought the description said the cold water handle stays on).

4. The hot water side of this tap has the tendency to heat up the cold water side by virtue of the tank being hot enough to heat the cold water tank/filter under the sink.

5. With the extra cost of continuously heating the under-sink tank, I'm not sure if it would just be cheaper to heat your water in the microwave.

If I knew when I bought this what I know now, I think I would have skipped it. That being said, for someone who really likes the convenience of always having hot water instantly, it fits the bill. We shut it off during the summer here in Phoenix because of the extra cost of heating this while trying to cool the house with air conditioning.

"great style, weird mechanics" 2009-09-11

I had purchased another style of hot water dispenser made by Insinkerator only to find that the post-to-spout distance was awkwardly short to reach my sink for filling anything. So I then replaced it with the Victorian model because the distance was stated as being an inch longer (it is). But the whole thing feels flimsy or fragile with that baseball bat-type lever. And I notice that the hot water continues to drip out for a few seconds after turning off the dispenser. The satin finish is a bit different from my satin finish faucet, but they are close enough. Each manufacturer has different color standards, I think. I will learn to love its idiosyncracies as it is one of my "can't live without" favorite gadgets.

The dispenser is beautiful, shiny, and a nice design. We were very shocked at how big it is, it's HUGE, but I guess that is our fault for paying closer attention to the dimensions. If I had purchased it from a store and not online, I would have returned it. It wasn't bad enough to have to deal with return shipping etc. It was easy to install and works as it should.

Overall, it look pretty and shiny, so we're happy.
